Maggi K. from Vivaah Celebrations had the pleasure of having a candid discussion with DJ H and learning more about her opinions and insights into the her industry which is as below.

1)  When did your journey into the world of DJing begin? What initially sparked your interest in becoming a DJ, and how did you get started in the industry?

At the age of 16, my journey into DJing began as a natural progression from my earlier passion for music. Having started playing the dhol at the age of 10, my father set me a goal to pass my exams, promising to reward me with my first set of decks. This promise materialized when I turned 16, marking the beginning of my DJing adventure. The spark that ignited my interest in becoming a DJ can be traced back to countless weddings I attended in my youth. As I stood there, captivated by the DJs and their artistry, a desire to get behind the decks and be a part of the music magic took hold of me. By the age of 16, I was already gaining valuable experience by joining wedding roadshows on weekends. These early experiences played a crucial role in shaping my skills and laying the foundation for my journey in the DJing industry.

2)  How did Kudos’ journey into the music industry begin, and what motivated you to focus on Bhangra & Bollywood while living in the UK?

My journey into the music industry was deeply rooted in my upbringing, with my father’s unwavering love for old Bollywood classics from legends like Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Immersed in the vibrant world of Bollywood movies, live events, and frequent trips to India, music became an integral part of my life from an early age. The rich tapestry of Punjabi music further fuelled my passion. An instrumental aspect of my musical journey was the monthly tour to clubs in Mumbai, Delhi, and Goa, where I DJed regularly. This experience not only expanded my musical horizons but also kept me deeply connected to the dynamic music scene in India. While my roots were firmly planted in Bollywood and Bhangra, I always considered myself an open-format DJ, adept at catering to diverse audiences.

3)  With your extensive experience performing around the world, do you have a favourite location or type of event to DJ at? How do you adapt your style to cater to diverse audiences?

Embarking on a global musical journey has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. Among the myriad destinations, Australia holds a special place in my heart. The opportunity to DJ at a wedding in Gold Coast and Brisbane was truly enchanting. The vibrant culture, coupled with the breathtaking beauty of the country, left an indelible mark. Another standout moment was recently in Dubai, where I had the privilege to DJ at a mixed wedding with a mixed wedding, where their bride was Iranian. Embracing the challenge, I mastered an Iranian music set, and it was heartening to witness guests approaching me, conversing in Iranian, Thinking could speak Iranian. The venue, situated at the base of the iconic Burj Khalifa in the Armani Hotel, added an extra layer of grandeur to the event. Gazing up at the towering Burj Khalifa while playing to a crowd with the fountains framing the bride and groom, it felt like a triumphant achievement. Adapting my style to diverse audiences is a thrilling aspect of my profession. Whether it’s the energetic vibes of Australia or the multicultural ambiance of a Dubai wedding, I relish the opportunity to curate a musical experience that resonates with the unique spirit of each location.

4)  Engaging with fans is crucial in today’s digital age. How do you leverage social media and technology to connect with your audience on a more personal level?

In this digital era, connecting with my audience on a personal level is a priority, and I employ various platforms to achieve this. My YouTube page serves as a hub for showcasing my remixes and original music, providing a continuous stream of fresh content for my audience. Regular updates and uploads on my Instagram not only keep followers informed about my professional whereabouts but also offer a glimpse into my daily life through engaging vlogs. The recent addition of voice-over vlogs has been particularly well-received, allowing my audience to get to know me on a deeper level. These endeavours on social media and technology platforms create a more intimate connection, bridging the gap between artist and audience.

5) Every industry has its challenges. What do you see as the biggest challenges facing DJs today, and how do you navigate them?

While the evolution of DJing has made technical aspects more accessible, the true challenge lies in the nuanced art of music curation and timing. In the bygone era of turntables and vinyl collection, the journey was arduous, with the need to physically search for rare records. Nowadays, the convenience of online platforms has streamlined music discovery and mixing. However, the most significant challenge for DJs today, particularly in the realm of events like weddings, is acquiring the wisdom of when to play specific tracks. This nuanced skill is best learned alongside a seasoned DJ, absorbing the invaluable knowledge accumulated over the years. Another hurdle is mastering the art of hosting, picking up the microphone, and building the confidence to engage with the audience. Having a clear and impactful voice is crucial. For aspiring DJs, the recommendation is to shadow an experienced mentor who can provide guidance in navigating these challenges effectively.

6)  What aspirations and goals have you set for yourself for the future?

My aspirations and goals, meticulously set years ago, have largely revolved around my passion for music, where I continue to achieve milestones and push the boundaries of creativity. Yet, beyond the music front, my most paramount goals are rooted in the essence of life. Foremost among them is cherishing quality family time, a cornerstone that enriches my personal journey. Creating lasting and extraordinary memories with my loved ones stands as a beacon of fulfilment and joy. Equally significant is my commitment to maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, a pursuit that extends beyond just physical fitness. Staying fit is not only about well-being but also about cultivating a mindset that keeps me energized and youthful. As I navigate the intricate tapestry of life, these goals serve as guiding stars, shaping a future where the harmony of family, memorable experiences, and well-being coalesce seamlessly.

7)  For those aspiring to enter the world of DJing, what advice would you give them based on your own experiences in the industry?

Embarking on a DJing career is a thrilling journey, and my advice for aspiring DJs is rooted in the wisdom gained from my own experiences. First and foremost, patience is key. Allow your skills to develop organically, and only take on events when you feel confident in navigating the unique challenges they present. It’s invaluable to accompany an experienced DJ, immersing yourself in different scenarios and diverse crowds. This hands-on approach not only refines your technical skills but also hones your ability to read and engage with audiences effectively. Importantly, never let the pursuit of money overshadow the joy of the journey. Enjoy the process, savor each performance, and the financial rewards will naturally follow. Life is a continuous adventure, and DJing is a vibrant chapter within it—embrace it fully.
